Esperanza Art Studio

Esperanza Art Studio

The arts are woven into all aspects of our adult day program at Esperanza Community Services. Activities like painting, drawing, music, theater, and dance allow participants an opportunity to apply skills and engage their senses. In addition, these activities provide an opportunity for exploration, self-expression, and decision-making.

An Expressive Art Studio

Esperanza Art Studio provides an opportunity for communication, exploration, self-expression, decision making, and a source of income for our adult participants. We are an expressive art studio. Artists work through their own ideas, in their own intuitive styles.

Ultimately, the works created at Esperanza gives viewers an understanding not only of the artists but also a deeper understanding of our similarity and shared humanity with the artists. The finished works inspire the viewer and advocate on behalf of their creators.

Esperanza’s Arts Program rests on four core ideas:

  • Creation in a judgment-free environment. Our artists are empowered to use art as a means of self-expression and self-discovery, free from criticism.
  • Independent decision-making. Aspects of the creative process, such as the selection of a subject or the right paint, provide opportunities for our artists to make independent decisions.
  • Inclusion. The creation and exhibition of art in galleries or at events helps facilitate greater community inclusion for our participants and students.
  • Self-purpose. The process of creating art and sharing it with the public allows our students and participants to develop a sense of self-purpose and direction. This also reaffirms to family and the wider community the valuable role that individuals with developmental disabilities play in our community.

This program is partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council Agency.
