The Esperanza Story
Guadalupe Reyes
Our Founder
“In 1969, a mother decided she wanted more for her son, Bobby, who was born with spinal meningitis.
Guadalupe Reyes—an immigrant daughter, community leader, and lifelong advocate—founded Esperanza School in a church basement, creating a place where children with developmental disabilities could receive the education and support they were denied elsewhere.
What began as a small, grassroots effort grew from Reyes’ determination to meet a need no one else was addressing. Over time, Esperanza expanded into a comprehensive organization serving both children and adults.
Today, Esperanza provides education, therapy, and support services to more than 300 individuals and their families each year, empowering them to achieve greater independence and quality of life.
Her legacy continues to guide Esperanza’s commitment to opportunity, dignity, and community-based care.”
